Creepy Mother of God

Polish Catholicism is a polytheism in disguise of a monotheism. It’s long known and even though almost every Polish Catholic will deny that – when asked about who is worshiped in Poland will mention God, Jesus (most often the same entity), Mary – Mother of God, innumerable amount of Saints for each occasion (from drivers and firefighters to epileptics).

The mother of god comes in many models – it is enough to take a look at very peculiar prayer – the Litany of Loreto, which mentions couple of them:

Litany of Loreto

V. Lord, have mercy.
R. Christ have mercy.
V. Lord have mercy. Christ hear us.
R. Christ graciously hear us.
God the Father of heaven, have mercy on us.
God the Son, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on us.
God the Holy Spirit, have mercy on us.
Holy Trinity, one God, have mercy on us.

Holy Mary, pray for us.
Holy Mother of God, pray for us.
Holy Virgin of Virgins, [etc.]
Mother of Christ,
Mother of divine grace,
Mother most pure,
Mother most chaste,
Mother inviolate,
Mother undefiled,
Mother most amiable,
Mother most admirable,
Mother of good Counsel,
Mother of our Creator,
Mother of our Savior,
Virgin most prudent,
Virgin most venerable,
Virgin most renowned,
Virgin most powerful,
Virgin most merciful,
Virgin most faithful,
Mirror of justice,
Seat of wisdom,
Cause of our joy,
Spiritual vessel,
Vessel of honor,
Singular vessel of devotion,
Mystical rose,
Tower of David,
Tower of ivory,
House of gold,
Ark of the covenant,
Gate of heaven,
Morning star,
Health of the sick,
Refuge of sinners,
Comforter of the afflicted,
Help of Christians,
Queen of Angels,
Queen of Patriarchs,
Queen of Prophets,
Queen of Apostles,
Queen of Martyrs,
Queen of Confessors,
Queen of Virgins,
Queen of all Saints,
Queen conceived without original sin,
Queen assumed into heaven,
Queen of the most holy Rosary,
Queen of families,
Queen of peace,

Just take a look at that – she is EVERYTHING. Or almost.

It comes in many variants, there are many statues of her placed all over the country. Some time ago I wrote about the magical springs, this time I want to write about creepy. But first things first.

There are many many different visualizations of May – made in form of paintings or statues. Up just until recently (and in many places even now) there is a tradition, which says, that if you build a house you have to build a small niche near the roof and place a small figure of Mary – be it a plastic one or clay – whatever. The figure must be there.

The most famous picture of Mary in Poland is probably the picture in Częstochowa (Czestochowa) – a city in the southern part of the country which several hundred years ago was under the siege of Swedish army. The legend claims that it was the holy painting of Mary that saved the hill with the monastery and the church. And soldiers.

The scars on Mary’s cheek are said to be cause by two stray Swedish bullets that grazed the image but “miraculously” didn’t damege it too much. The painting is now presented in the church on the monastery hill and there is a lot of people visiting it hoping the image will cure their innumerable diseases. Unsurprisingly – there are reports of such events, although none verified (what a surprise).

The city and the image are in the center of a mass madness as each year there is a pilgrimage from all over the country – Catholics from every corner of Poland walk BY FOOT, quite often more than 500 km, just to visit the church and see the picture. What is really funny is that the REAL pictures is in the safe and what is shown to the public – is a mere replica. So another thing in this religion based on lie.

There are dozens and dozens of different versions of Mary, but none of them is as creepy as this one:

If you look at her face it seems as if she was some kind of mutant vampire or something. The look in her eyes is somehow “cruel” and “Evil”. The face of Jesus is deformed in such way, that you begin to wonder that maybe the son of god was a mutant Chuckie.

I probably don’t have to mention that this vision of Mary is light years away from a 14 year old JEWISH girl from Palestine 2000 years ago. And frankly – none of the visualizations of Mary worshiped around the country resembles the real Mary. Usually it is more like a mother, or a child-minder, not a creepy Caucasian woman.

I took the photo at some bar and I forgot to check what version was that. But in all seriousness – the name is not that important. The looks are enough. And have no fear – there are dozens of such deformed Marys and Jesuses. You will surely find one to suit your own taste.

Nocturnal primate - dumb as I am now it used to be worse.
